Challenge Accepted: Ben

“I’m a Disability and Community Support Worker and I like to go climbing when I’m off shift.”

Ben, a Disability and Community Support Worker, likes to decompress after a long shift by visiting his local rock-climbing gym. He stresses the importance of needing scrubs that are dynamic to suit a whole range of tasks he may be completing that day. Similarly, his rock-climbing hobby requires clothing that moves with his body as he stretches, swings, and jumps.

“There’s no real typical day in this kind of work.”

Ben's day might begin with assisting a child in getting ready for school or helping someone in and out of a support vehicle, and it might end with taking someone to an appointment or to go grocery shopping with a client. However, one thing is always guaranteed: he’ll be on his feet, stretching, walking, and bending, and he’ll need to wear scrubs that are durable and comfortable to get his job done.

“I came to a place where I wanted to settle down and have an impactful career where I got to help people and engage with them.”

Ben is a true extrovert and a lot of people in his life told him he’d suit a career in support work. His first career was teaching kids adventure activities, like canoeing, riding horses, rock-climbing, and archery. His next career was studying and becoming a carpenter. Next, he decided to give support work a go and found it worked out to be the perfect combination of a few things he loved, like working with people.
 

“I need scrubs that are very dynamic. I do a lot of different things from running around outside, helping people in the kitchen, and assisting people in and out of wheelchairs. So I need scrubs that are comfortable and aren’t just going to fall apart at the first sign of stress.”

With a job that demands so much physical activity, it’s important to Ben that his scrubs don’t feel constricting or uncomfortable, and that they will last him up to 18 hours on his feet at work.
 

“It’s a very high intensity, high pressure job where you can get a lot of tension in your body and I needed a physical outlet that uses my whole body. Not just lifting weights or going for a run, I needed to really decompress and I found that climbing was a really accessible way to do that.”

Climbing came into his life thanks to its high level of accessibility. With at least one rock-climbing gym in every major city, he can keep up his hobby when travelling. The reason he’s fallen in love with climbing is the way it allows his whole body to decompress after a long shift.
 

“Wearing the scrubs today was amazing. I really felt like I was wearing something that was designed to be moved in and was also comfortable and lightweight. They felt like activewear and not like scrubs.”

Ben often works long shifts and he found that the NNT scrubs would be able to handle it thanks to their durability and lightweight construction.
